Concerts in an Intimate Setting in Carmichael
As soon as JoDavi (Joshua David Washington) and his amazing band and mini choir finished their show the first time they performed here, I started scheming to get them back for another night of his fantastic “Symphonic Soul.” JoDavi is a singer, songwriter, conductor and arranger extraordinaire who has basically created his own genre, which incorporates elements of funk, soul, reggae and R&B in lush, orchestral arrangements. His compositions bring to mind Earth, Wind and Fire, The Commodores, and The Fifth Dimension, but in a way all his own. He founded Current Personae, the Stockton music collective that could best be described as giant soul orchestra, led piano and string “chamber soul” ensembles, and collaborated with vocalists and instrumentalists too numerous to mention. He has over a dozen albums to his credit. We’re in for another phenomenal night!
Doors open at 7:00 pm and the music starts at 8:00. There will be complimentary food and drinks while they last and we always encourage concertgoers to bring something to eat and drink for all to share. Tickets are $25 per person (100% of the proceeds go to the performing artists) and you can get them here. We hope to see you May 4th!
Please join us June 15th, when we get to welcome back Hans! And The Hot Mess after way too long of an absence! Hans is a Sacramento legend. Equally known for fronting Soul and R&B juggernaut Joy & Madness, Hans' music with The Hot Mess is melodic and smartly crafted. I’ve described it as "Ben Harper meets The Beatles," but his style is very much his own, instantly recognizable to those fortunate enough to experience what the Mess does best, which is get people happily humming, singing along and dancing. They’re one of our favorites. Hans, Nyxi, Josh, and Tony bring it every night and this will be no exception!

We first heard Ideateam about eight years ago at a CIP Sacramento show and have had them right around the top of our “must see” list ever since, catching them in concert every time we can. We jumped at the chance to host them at 5150, and August 10th can't come fast enough. Calling the band a funk and R & B collective is too simplistic. Ideateam weaves big doses of jazz and improv into a sound that features complicated, poly-rhythmic horn charts, a stellar rhythm section, deft jazz-rock fusion guitar, and some of the smoothest Soul/R&B vocals we’ve ever heard.

We’re delighted to welcome Katie Knipp back to Theater 5150 September 13, 2024! Katie’s a force of nature, a consummate musician: accomplished Blues and R&B songwriter, pianist, dobro/bottleneck slide, and harmonica player who possesses one of the most beautiful, emotive, and powerful voices we’ve ever heard. Although she’s received first ballot Grammy consideration in the contemporary blues category and her three most recent albums have all found their way into the Billboard blues top ten, I would not describe her as a blues artist, per se. Instead, she’s a multi-genre chanteuse who effortlessly slides from gorgeous Nina Simone-influenced ballads to gritty Mississippi delta blues, with numerous stops in between. Her new album will be out by the time of the show, so we should be treated to some brand new music from one of our all-time favorites!

The last time Dirty Cello performed here, they wowed a packed house with their astonishing technical virtuosity, the excellence of their original material, the audacity of some of their covers (Jimi Hendrix on cello, anyone?), and their hilarious storytelling. Not more than a few minutes after they finished their encore, I asked if they’d be willing to do it again sometime. They said “yes” and that time will be October 18th, this time with the full band. Dirty Cello can’t be categorized. Led by cello savant Rebecca Roudman, their music is all over the map. You’re as likely to hear their spin on bluegrass gems, Mississippi blues, Klezmer turned surf music, Jimi Hendrix psychedelia or Led Zeppelin crunchers as you are their extensive catalogue of “bluesy grass” Americana originals. Don’t miss this one!

Hattie Craven last performed here to a full house in a small ensemble setting with Jessica Malone and Ruby Jaye as Hattie & The Moon Howlers. This time, she’ll be backed by a full band, putting on display her Funk/R&B chops to go with her gorgeous vocals and instrumental prowess on guitar, ukulele, and banjolele (“Banjolina Jolie”). We couldn’t be more excited to hear what she has in store for us!
